Have you ever heard of a fruit that delivers five different flavors in a single bite? It is not a metaphor or an exaggeration. This fruit really exists, and its name is Schisandra chinensis. Koreans call it Omija, which literally means "five-flavored fruit." In China, it is known as Wu Wei Zi, which has exactly the same meaning.
And yes, this small red fruit is one of the key ingredients found in every Vitabon product.
But before we talk about that, it is worth getting to know what Schisandra really is.

One Fruit, Five Flavors

Schisandra grows wild in the mountain forests of East Asia, stretching from northern China and Korea to Japan and Siberia. It is a woody climbing vine that can grow up to nine meters tall, producing clusters of small, bright red berries that resemble miniature grapes.
What makes Schisandra different from other fruits is its flavor. When you bite into a fresh Schisandra berry, you experience five distinct tastes almost simultaneously: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent. These flavors do not come from five different fruits, but from a single berry. Its skin tends to taste sweet and sour, while its seeds are bitter and slightly pungent. A subtle salty note brings everything together.
In traditional Chinese and Korean medicine, these five flavors represent more than sensations on the tongue. Each flavor is believed to correspond to a different organ. Sour is associated with the liver, bitter with the heart, sweet with the spleen, pungent with the lungs, and salty with the kidneys. Because Schisandra contains all five flavors, it is traditionally believed to support the body as a whole.
This is why Schisandra holds a special place in traditional medicine. It is not considered an ordinary fruit, but one regarded as "complete."

An Ancient Record That Remains Relevant

Schisandra is not a new trend. Its earliest recorded use appears in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing, a traditional Chinese medical text dating back more than 2,000 years. The text describes Schisandra as a tonic traditionally used to calm the mind, maintain stamina, and promote longevity.
In Korea, Schisandra, or Omija, has long been part of everyday culture. Omija-cha, or Omija tea, can be found in many traditional Korean restaurants. It has a refreshing, slightly tart flavor and is often served cold during the summer.
In Russia, Schisandra began receiving scientific attention in the 1960s. At the time, Russian researchers officially classified it as an adaptogen in the Soviet Pharmacopoeia. The Nanai hunters of Siberia had already been using it for generations to maintain stamina during long hunting trips in extremely cold conditions.
So, if you think Schisandra only became popular recently, the truth is that it has been used for thousands of years across three different healing traditions.

What Can Schisandra Do for the Body?

In traditional Korean and Chinese medicine, Schisandra is associated with several specific functions.

1. Respiratory Support

Schisandra is traditionally believed to have a close connection with the lungs. In Japan, the fruit has often been used for concerns such as coughing, a dry throat, or labored breathing.

2. As an Adaptogen

This means Schisandra is considered a plant that may help the body adapt to physical and mental pressure.
It does not mean that Schisandra eliminates stress. Instead, it may support the body in responding to pressure more calmly.

3. A Calming Effect

In traditional Chinese medicine, Schisandra is known for its ability to "calm the spirit" and "keep the heart at peace." In modern terms, this roughly refers to supporting a calm state of mind and better-quality rest.

4. A Source of Natural Antioxidants

This fruit is rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, and lignans, particularly Schisandrin B and Schisandrin C. These compounds are known for their potential to help protect cells against damage caused by oxidative stress.

Schisandra and Vitabon

Vitabon uses Schisandra essential oil as one of the three to five core herbal ingredients in each of its variants. V21, V21 Max, V21 Black, and V21 Flower all contain Schisandra.
Why? Because Vitabon is not an ordinary aroma inhaler diffuser that focuses only on flavor. From the beginning, Vitabon was formulated based on research into traditional Korean medicine, known as Hanbang, in which Schisandra is one of the most highly regarded ingredients. It is considered a "complete" fruit because of its traditional association with the body's five major organs.
It is no coincidence that Schisandra is included in every variant. This is a deliberate choice because Vitabon's philosophy is rooted in time-tested Korean herbal traditions rather than seasonal flavor trends that come and go.
When you inhale Vitabon, the aroma of Schisandra creates one of the sensory layers that sets it apart from other products.
It offers a depth of flavor that cannot be found in conventional vape liquids because it does not come from synthetic flavoring. Instead, it comes from fruit extract that has undergone years of low-temperature fermentation.
The fermentation process follows a traditional Korean method. Herbal ingredients are stored in earthenware jars and buried underground to maintain a stable temperature.
The process takes at least five years before the result is ready to use. Its purpose is not only to preserve quality but also to deepen the aroma and character of each herbal ingredient.

The Easiest Way to Discover It

If you are curious about Schisandra but have never tried it, the easiest way to experience it is through Vitabon. You do not need to buy dried berries or brew Omija tea.
Simply try one of the Vitabon V21 variants, pay attention to its aroma, and experience for yourself the layers of flavor that distinguish it from conventional vapes.
Sometimes, an ingredient with thousands of years of history is best enjoyed in the most modern way.
